"The purpose of this organization shall be to foster the highest standards of excellence in the practice of the art of embroidery through an active program of education and study and to preserve the heritage of the art of embroidery." (EGA Bylaws, Article II)
Well, here we are almost into summer already. Gardening, sun, and maybe stitching on a porch somewhere - what a great way to spend some time. I hope you will make the most of your summer; I think we’ve all earned it, after getting through an almost-record-breaking winter.
Did you get to Little Stitches VII? Eleanor Bajohr and Bobbi Yonai and all their assistants did a wonderful job of putting on a great mini-seminar. It just whets the appetite for next year’s MER Seminar 2002. We should have our brochures for Chautauqua in early fall, but it’s definitely not too soon to start saving for it, and do set aside the first five days of next May.
Mary Ann Benkoski and her Ways and Means committee also deserve special commendation and our thanks, as do all those stitchers who helped with the bear, the bunny, the pigs, and the puppy that were offered at Little Stitches. They were a great hit at Little Stitches, and their production and distribution will go toward bringing in a teacher next summer. Thank you, one and all, for your contributions.
We are so fortunate to have CNY EGA. I have learned more from fellow guild members than I can possibly enumerate here, and the friendships also greatly enhance my life. Your benefits from CNY EGA will be directly proportional to the amount of time and energy you invest -- please do come and join us, and add to the mix!

August 11 -The Town of Onondaga Historic House Tour will have a display of the Central New York Chapter of EGA Collectable needle arts on August 11th from 10 am - 4 pm. Some of our members might be interested in seeing some of this collection at the House tour. If you need more info, contact Marion Warner.
February 2002 - Needle Art Exhibit
We have accepted an opportunity to exhibit our needle art at the Baldwinsville Library for the month of February 2002. They have exhibited many different types of art work for the past 21 years. This is an excellent opportunity to display our work as the libraries have a constant flow of traffic seven days a week. It would be a great chance to gain new members and share our love of needle Art - Kathy Fonda

The election of officers for the 2001-2002 year was held at our May meetings. Dixie Nohara was re-elected to serve a full term as 1st vice president, Nancy Hough was re-elected treasurer, Mary Hickox was elected day secretary, and Debbie Dunn was elected evening secretary. Congratulations to all four of you! And the thanks of our whole chapter goes to Lilly Kent, outgoing day secretary, and Jill Sarkodie-Mensah, outgoing evening secretary. Your service to CNY EGA is greatly appreciated!
July's evening meeting is a Glove Frame Weight with Jean Klym. Please bring a cotton garden glove (solid color) and flower-colored threads for stitching as well as your usual stitching supplies. Jean says she found her gloves at Home Depot for $1.99 a pair. If you have any dress gloves left over from the days when a properly dressed lady did not leave home with bare hands, Jean says they are also good. The filling and instructions for completing the weight will be available at the meeting. There will be a charge for the filling, but Jean is not sure how much at this time.
August's evening meeting is a Christmas ornament taught by Phyllis Woodard. Information about supplies can be found elsewhere in this newsletter. Phyllis will show us how to finish the ornament at the September meeting. Models of this ornament were shown at the May and maybe at the June meetings.
Looking ahead - Early in the fall we will be meeting to plan our programs for 2002. We need ideas from everyone if we are to plan interesting programs. We also need volunteers to serve on the the program committee. If you have any ideas, would be willing to serve on the committee or if you would be willing to present a program, please contact Dixie Nohara.
We’ve had some very good programs in the last three months. Thanks so much to Charlane Wainwright and Imelda Nichter for the great programs they provided in March, April, and May. It was fun and interesting to think about color under Charlane’s guidance, and it seems that a number of stitchers have applied that to the Spring Garden sampler Mel taught in April and May. Thanks to you both, from all of us! And wasn’t it fun to meet at the Octagon House? The rooms were interesting to see, and our meeting room was bright and welcoming. Thanks to Pat Schmidt and her sister Joy for all their work in arranging things.
Our June luncheon brings us back to Bellevue Country Club for our luncheon and installation of new officers. Directions and other information appear elsewhere in the newsletter. This promises to be a very special event, and I think the program will be of interest to all of us.
In July and August we will be holding our annual stitch-ins at Lois Lewis’ camp on Skaneateles Lake. This is a great way to get in a little guilt-free stitching in the daytime, along with some good conversation. Plan to join us if you possibly can.
Our hospitality committee for this past year has done a great job, and we sincerely thank Janet Johnston, Lorraine Levine, Muriel Roe, and Genevieve Jones for what they added to the camaraderie of our meetings. We have a new committee ready to go in September, but we need another two or three people to fill in occasionally when someone has to be away. Volunteers would be greatly appreciated! Please see me if you can help in this way.
As you probably remember, Muriel Roe, one of our past presidents, asked that instead of providing her with a gift as she left upstate New York for the sunny skies of Texas, we contribute to a scholarship to Seminar 2002, in her honor. If you would like to make a contribution to this scholarship, money may be sent to Nancy Hough. The Executive Board will be conferring this summer in order to establish criteria for the awarding of this award, as well as the process for applying. We should have information available in the September newsletter; stay tuned.
The June Luncheon is being held June 20th at the Bellevue Country Club, 1904 Glenwood Avenue, Syracuse. Please send your choice of entrees - Stuffed Chicken Breast with Broccoli/Cheddar, Baked Boston Scrod w/cracker crumb crust, or Fettuccini Primavera.

The Spring Mid-Eastern Region meeting was held at Little Stitches VII. A new Region Director was elected: Margarette Fessel. She will be following in Judy Arthur's footsteps and no doubt will do a great job as did Judy.
Good news from Chautauqua 2000: profit was $7,961.07. Chautauqua 2002 will be held May 1 - 5, with the theme "Patterns from the Past". A new addition to the seminar will be a commemorative basket with a special, inscribed brass plaque. The basket measures 16.5" long, 8.5" wide and 9" high. The cost of this basket is $35, and it will be available only to people who are attending the seminar. The maker of this basket is a supplier to L.L. Bean. I have a picture of the basket and it will be available at the meetings. The Scholarship drawing has been extended to December. If you would like to purchase a chance(s) to win your registration to the seminar with a guaranteed pick of your class, let me know. The Chautauqua brochures will be mailed to each member in August. If you would like to donate something for an opportunity basket for Chautauqua, please let me know. Last year CNY donated a basket, and I'd like to see the same thing happen for 2002.
