News from Smyrna

It has always been a tradition at the Smyrna Band Concerts that after a selection was played the audience would show their appreciation by applauding, just like they do in big venues like the Dome. Our method of applauding is done just a little bit differently here in Smyrna. We honk the horns in our cars so that the members of the orchestra can hear us upstairs on the porch. It seems that a lot of people were out and catching up with friends and families on the first Monday night and there was not a lot of “honking” applauding going on. So friends, would you please designate a “honker” so the band really knows we love what they do. Otherwise you are going to have to raise your voices in a big “HURRAH!” for them to hear us. Thank you!

Vacation News: Regina and Jerry Cole and daughter Wendy and hubby Dave are going to get out of town for a weekend of camping. They are going up North to a wonderful campsite and enjoy the breezes and the quiet. HAPPY CAMPING FOLKS!
The Smyrna Fire Department is holding a drawing for a gun. Well, it is really a month of guns. Tickets are on sale at the Smyrna Market and the Smyrna Feed Store and by the members of the department. We have Marlins, Thompsons, Remingtons, Rogers and more. Tickets are $20. YOU must be 18 years of age. A limit of 1,000 tickets are to be sold. The tickets are non-transferable. But if you pick up a ticket, then you can read all the rules and regulations yourself. SUPPORT THE SMYRNA FIRE DEPARTMENT and maybe you will be one of the lucky ones to win a beautiful gun.

Hazel’s nephews and nieces are having a get-together on the 16th and Lee and I have been invited to attend. Joe has this big to-do once a year where he invites the family and friends. He really is a good cook, so we are looking forward to the event. It is a two-hour drive; he lives just off the exit for Nichols, NY on Route 17. Families can be a pain, but they also can be great fun!

Shirley Charles was a friend that Shirley Swayze and I met through bowling. We were at the Hi-Skor Lanes in Earlville looking to fill a team and so were the members of her team. We always had a good time with them on Wednesday night if we were competing with them or bowling together. It has been years since we broke up the team for various health reasons of us all and I am sad to say I didn’t always stay in touch. But I miss my bowling friend. I always tried to go to the Farmers’ Market on Saturdays in Hamilton and see everyone I missed and I always looked for Shirley and her Mom, Alice Rodman. Happy Bowling Shirley!

On a happier note, Guy and Edna stopped by at West Main Street. Guy was a trucker and knew Lee because of the job Lee did. They had a great visit and shared a lot of memories. Edna worked at the former Ames store in Hamilton for a long time. She is a great knitter. They now live in Dade City, FL and had come up to visit their daughter in Whitney Point. Please don’t ask me to spell their last name because I would mess it up royally. But I know they get the paper in Florida and I hope they will forgive me.

Clippingers are having a big family gathering with members coming from all over. They will be staying here in Smyrna and at the Lake. Al is from Nashville, Charlie is from Columbus, GA. and Daryl is here from Hollywood, MD. I thought for sure Judy was going to say CA. All the brothers are accompanied by their wives and Charlie’s daughter Martha is here exhibiting her “Quilt Paintings” in the Earlville Opera House. Scott and Judy’s son James is home as is Mary Alice. Martha graduated from Fordham University and Mary Alice is a senior there this year.
