Discovery of the Tug Boat "Cormorant"Part 1 |
According to the Institute for Great Lakes Research at Bowling Green University, the CORMORANT was built in 1941 at Manitowoc, WI. Originally called D.D.A. 43, the 43-foot vessel was owned by Merritt, Chapman, and Scott of New York, a marine construction firm. The vessel had a steel hull and registered at 18 gross and 12 net tons. The dimensions were 42.8' x 11.8' x 5.0'.
The vessel disappeared from the Coast Guard registration list in 1944, then reappeared in 1949 as the RUSSELL 4, owned by Newton Creek Towing Company of New York. In 1949, Merritt, Chapman and Scott re-purchased the vessel and named it CORMORANT. This was the last name change before the 1958 sinking.
