The Search for a Deep Water Sonar Target: Why the ROBERVAL?

During the fall of 1996 we went to a lecture at the SUNY Oswego Campus. We listened to Robert Manning from Lockeed Martin. His lecture was primarily on developing student skills and providing some information on what awaits them as they enter the workplace. As a side topic he talked about a project that he has been working on with the University of Michigan called synthetic aperture sonar. Doug and Dennis knew of Mr. Manning and hearing of his upcoming lecture, Doug showed him some of our sonar images of the Wolf Islander. Mr. Manning had mentioned that the"U of M" had an ROV (remote operating vehicle) with camera equipment that they might be willing to use it to help us identifying a deep water sonar target when they come through our end of the lake next summer (1997). Although we found out during the winter months of 1997 that the U of M would be willing to participate, it would entail some significant costs, and being a volunteer organization, we would have to find another way to make positive identification should we be able to find the wreck site.
